Pile Boss
A field tool that listens to the hammer, counts the blows, and hands you the state DOT pile driving log — built for the person standing at the rig with a clipboard.
Set the phone down near the rig. Pile Boss hears the hammer, counts every blow, keeps the count by the foot as you mark each one, checks the drive against the drive criteria, and prints the finished record on your agency's own form. You leave the site with a clean log instead of a wind-blown, mud-streaked sheet to transcribe later.

It counts the blows for you
Pile Boss listens to the hammer through the microphone and counts each blow as it lands — no tapping, no clicker, no losing count when someone asks a question. A live trace on screen shows every hit as it happens, so you can see it keeping pace with the hammer instead of trusting it blind.
Stroke is shown live for every blow and averaged by the foot, straight from the sound of the hammer, so the log carries stroke the way the form asks for it without anyone reading a gauge or guessing.
All you do is press MARK FOOT — one big glove-sized button. The phone buzzes and, if you want, speaks the foot aloud so you never have to look down. Count in feet, tenths, inches, or your own interval, and switch mid-drive when the pile slows.
Made for the site
The record
- Projects, structures, substructures and piles laid out the way the plans are, with the inspector, hammer, pile type, cutoff, weather and temperature on every pile
- Drive criteria set once per substructure — blows per foot, minimum stroke, penetration or tip elevation — and a clear meets / does not meet verdict on every pile that updates if the criteria change
- Initial drive, redrives and restrikes on one log; splices, pile runs, fuel-setting changes, depth corrections and notes stamped where they happened
- An editable drive log — fix a blow count or an ending depth on the phone, and the record keeps both the original and the correction. Nothing is ever silently overwritten
- Job info for the whole form: engineers, contractors, cushion and the rest, entered once and printed on every pile. Weather and temperature are chosen per pile, because they change
The forms
Every pile exports as a PDF and as an Excel workbook on the agency's own layout — measured off the blank form, with the header, the foot-by-foot table and the notes where the form puts them. Export a structure or a whole project and the workbook comes out with one tab per pile.

Hydraulic and air/steam hammers are in there too, and you can add your own in thirty seconds.

Buy the app once. Subscribe only if you export more than a handful of piles a month. The same on both platforms — prices are in US dollars, and your store shows your own currency.

Pro is only worth it if five piles a month is not enough. The free month runs once per customer, and you can cancel it in your store before it bills.
A pile is charged once, and only once, ever. Re-sending a record you have already exported is free forever — a different format, a corrected job number, a bounced email, the state coming back six months later. Five piles means five piles, not five files: one pile sent as a PDF and an Excel sheet is one pile. And running out of the month's five never stops you recording, never watermarks a form, and never quietly drops piles out of a batch — it tells you plainly that you are out.

Pile Boss is being proven at working rigs, and the people best placed to find its faults are the ones standing at them. Send us a report we can act on and we will arrange a discount code, sized to what you found.

- A blow count that did not match what happened — with the hammer, the site conditions, and roughly when
- An agency form that printed a value in the wrong field — send us the page
- A crash, or a screen that could not be worked with gloves on
- A device whose microphone struggles with a rig, with the make and model

What it is not
Pile Boss is not a PDA or dynamic testing system. It does not measure driving stress, energy transfer or capacity, and it does not replace the engineer's judgement or the contract documents. The decibel figure it shows is uncalibrated — it exists to help you set the threshold, not to measure sound.
Tallie Tales LLC is not affiliated with or endorsed by any transportation agency. The form layouts are reproduced so an inspector can fill them in; they are not approved submissions.
Your data stays on your device
Pile Boss has no accounts, no sign-in, and no server of ours. Every log you record is stored on your own phone or tablet and nowhere else. The microphone is used only to hear the hammer — audio is analysed on the device as it happens and is never recorded or stored. We do not collect, transmit, sell, or share your data. Buying the app, and the optional Pro subscription, are handled entirely by Google Play or the App Store; they take the payment, we never see a card number. Read the full privacy policy.
